Talking about Arsenal and their improvements at the medical department last time I wanted to give you an even better impression how things come together. That is why I want to present you a translation from a German 11freunde.de column which impressed me last year. The article was written by Christoph Biermann on 10th of December 2014. The talking points are training methods and injuries and who are the pioneers in this subject. Hope you enjoy it!
Mikel Arteta isn't as good as he used to be. Whether it's due to age, injuries or his midfield partners, the Spaniard seems to be becoming less positively influential. Most notably losing pace over the last year, it's time to think about a replacement for the Barça youth product. Mikel looks most comfortable when partnered with Aaron Ramsey, but his play under pressure when isolated and his lack of engine could become a problem for an Arsenal side that wants to challenge for trophies in years to come. Borussia Dortmund's İlkay Gündoğan has been mentioned in the past, but his injuries and links to Real Madrid plus an undoubtedly huge price tag make him a seemingly unattainable target.
A player that hasn't been mentioned as Arteta's heir and Aaron Ramsey's future other half in the centre of midfield, is Daley Blind.
A lot has happened since I last wrote something. Arsenal have played 22 matches, signed Mesut Özil, and our boys in red and white are currently top of the Premier League and top their Champions League group as the bookmakers' favourites to go through. It’s a great time to be a Gooner. Sadly, the international break showed its hideous, boring face again and now we’re already talking about the January transfer window.
The general consensus is that we need another striker, to relieve the pressure on Olivier ‘I’m okay with my body’ Giroud. Whilst I do agree with that, writing about Dutch football is part of my job description. Since there isn’t a good enough Eredivisie striker for us to get excited about, allow me to look at another position Arsenal need strengthening in.
