New England song & rare photo of Harry Kane with his mouth closed

Looking for the perfect tune to cheer on England for Euro 2016? We’ve just found an absolute belter. ‘We’re Gonna Win the Euros’ by the aptly named, ‘The 1966’, has all the key elements of a hit football anthem; it has cheeky optimisim, offset by the kind of comedic pessimism well over ’30 year of hurt’ brings, all under pinned by an extremely catchy and chantable chorus. We think it’s going to hit the charts in a big way, especially as all proceeds from iTunes downloads are being donated to music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins. Get on it, it’s only 59p! Plus, the video is cracker.

Whilst we talking about the video, it’s basically of group of youngsters wearing masks of Gazza, Linekar, Hart and other squad members running amock with a couple of guitars and a sofa. That probably sounds a bit negative but it totally works with the songs shouty, anthemic chorus. Then factor in finger puppets, also with masks, missed goals and Linekar in his underpants and you’ve got a winner.

Okay, we have to admit it, the three minute song is a bit rough around the edges – it sounds a bit like what you’d get if Pete Doherty went on a bender and spent his hangover watching England World Cup Semi Final losses and ‘Three Lions’ covers.  But, trust me it’s in a good way, and it appears to be totally intentional. The song and its accompanying video was written and produced by students from the School of Communication Arts on a budget of just £19.66, with a 24 hour deadline, can you believe it? It does show, but that’s part of the gag. The song was commissioned by discount website MyVoucherCodes to promote the website’s Euro 2016 moneysaving campaign, ‘Supporting England on a Budget’.

The song and the video is a bittersweet love song to the cruel mistress of English international football, highlighting some of the great and downright dire moments from across the years - including Gareth Southgate’s infamous penalty miss against Germany in the Semi Finals of Euro ’96, as well as Gazza’s Triumphant goal against Scotland in the same tournament. Fingers crossed then, let’s hope the boys can recapture the spirit of 1966 and bring the trophy home, in the meantime we’ll keep singing: ‘Goal, Goal, Goal, Goal…. We’re Gonna Win The Euros’.
