Can Arsenal win the FA Cup?

We teamed up with FA Cup specialist over at FootballPredictions.com (and Gooner) Andrew Bennett, according to him Arsenal are running down a blind alley. The Gunners suffered an embarrassing 10-2 aggregate loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16 and following a 3-1 loss to Liverpool the capital club dropped to fifth place in the Premier League standings. Arsenal fans want Arsene Wenger out, but it remains to be seen if he is going to keep his job by winning the FA Cup trophy.

Arsenal kicked off their FA Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over Championship side Preston. Arsene Wenger rested key player Alexis Sanchez against the Lilywhites, but thanks to Aaron Ramsey’s and Olivier Giroud’s goals the Premier League side set up a meeting with Southampton in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Many football predictions suggested that Arsenal would have a big fish to fry in the clash against the Saints, but they did remarkably well to hammer Claude Puel’s troops at St. Mary’s Stadium (5-0). Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick against Southampton, with Danny Welbeck scoring a brace on his return to the starting line-up. As expected the Gunners recorded a routine win over Sutton United in round 5 and they are regarded as hot favourites to beat yet another non-league side, Lincoln City, in the quarter-finals of the cup competition.

Arsene Wenger’s men are on a quest to regain the trophy they won two seasons ago and it has to be noted that they will become the most successful club in the history of the competition should they happen to win the 2016/2017 FA Cup title. Arsenal have slim chances of winning the Premier League as they are 16 points behind league leaders Chelsea in the standings, but, no doubt, they are capable of going all the way in the FA Cup. Fellow title contenders Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United are playing on three fronts and that is yet another reason why Arsenal are expected to win the FA Cup. Chelsea are enjoying a season to remember and seeing that the Blues do not take part in European competitions this season, it is no surprise many people consider Antonio Conte’s charges the main favourites to win the domestic cup competition.

The FA Cup has saved Arsene Wenger before, but his reign as Arsenal coach appears to be on the verge of ending. The Gunners have been playing below expectations in the English top flight this season and the 10-2 Bayern Munich humiliation means that something needs to change at one of the world’s biggest club. Arsenal can save the season by winning the FA Cup title, but we believe that nothing can help Arsene Wenger save his job.

Anyhow, Arsenal will fight tooth and nail in the remainder of the season in order to book their place in the Champions League and, on the other hand, they will take every single match in the FA Cup very seriously. A win over Lincoln City would see the Gunners move one step closer to winning the competition and, taking everything into account, we predict that Arsenal fans will have a reason for celebration on May 27, 2017, when the 2016/2017 FA Cup final will be hosted by Wembley Stadium.
