He wasn’t very delicate (though he could be when he wanted to be), but Martin was known to put up a fight and be horrible – although many argue that he always did his job. He was one of the great man-markers in British football history, and will be remembered for that. His 20-year career attests to this.

This guy had his heart on his sleeve, and it’s exactly for this reason that he will always be remembered. He understood the game, but the game ran away with him at times; he showed his emotions at all times – everyone knew when he was winning, and everyone knew when he was losing as well. Gilberto Silva

Unfortunately underrated by many, his work deserves more credit than people warrant. He could be intimidating and crossed the line at times, but he provided a great platform as a midfielder for others to achieve great success.
