Is Ramsey Ready to Sign a New Deal?

When it comes to player transfers World Cup summers are often the maddest. There is little movement before the competition with selling clubs hoping international endeavours will ramp the price up and sellers reticent to commit big money to a player who picks up an injury playing for their country. After the final whistle though...then it's a free for all.

Arsenal is a club that could be made or broken by this transfer window as the World Cup and all the frantic last minute negotiating that goes with it also coincides with their biggest period of change in the last 22 years. New Arsenal Head Coach, Unai Emery has the monumental task of improving an underperforming squad, replacing a club and game legend, signing new players, implementing a new style of play and keeping his best players out of the clutches of vultures hoping to find some carrion around the Emirates.

However, Emery will be pleased to hear that the task of keeping his best players may have become a little easier with news that Aaron Ramsey is keen to play for him. 

Ramsey's future is possibly the one great worry for the new regime but the signs coming from the Ramsey camp is that the Welsh star wants to commit his peak years to Arsenal. If that business can be sorted quickly then it leaves Emery and co free to identify new signings.

The predictability of Arsenal going into the summer with a major star in the last year of their contract is painful for Arsenal supporters as their fresh start with a new manager kicks off with old problems. Ramsey has just one year remaining on his current contract and is coming off one of his best campaigns at the Emirates. Supporters will be loathe to lose their Player of the Season, especially as the club adapts to the changing of the guard. 

Arsenal have been burned before with players entering the last year of their contract, often forced to sell to rivals rather than see them leave for free. However, the new recruitment team managed to get a good deal out of United in the Alexis transfer so there is hope that the mistakes of the past won't be repeated with Ramsey. 

Emery inherits a good squad but for all intents and purposes his first "war chest" at Arsenal looks rather light with reports of just £50m plus whatever can be raised in player sales and Ramsey is one of Arsenal's most bankable assets. The Welshman has made no secret of his desire to play in Spain one day but Arsenal will now be hoping it will be a swan song and they will not be forced to sell because the player won't commit their future to the club. The new man hasn't spoken to Ramsey yet but he will no doubt be emboldened by Ramsey saying he is excited by the change in manager and is champing at the bit to get back to Arsenal. Whatever Arsenal do over the next few weeks it can be expected that their top priority will be following up Aaron's comments with a strong contract offer.
