Five signings Arsenal can make to strengthen in January

Arsenal entered this campaign considerably under the radar in comparison to previous seasons, with the trio of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea among the favourites to win the Premier League.

But under new boss Unai Emery, the Gunners are unbeaten in 16 matches following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Wolves and are increasingly looking like potential title challengers as opposed to also-rans. With odds on the Gunners lifting the title currently as far as a massive 66/1 with Coral bookmakers, Emery’s men are valuable dark horses after such a positive to the 2018/19 Premier League season.

The Gunners are tipped to do well this season in the Europa League and they sit top of Group E after four games with 10 points and are unbeaten so far in the tournament. Given that Emery lifted the trophy in 2013-14, 14-15 and 15-16 it may well be worth a bet at 8/1 with 888sport.

Arsenal will need to bolster their options in January however if they are to maintain their current form and challenge at the top end of the table, so with that in mind, what signings could they make to strengthen?

Cengiz Under

Arsenal reportedly had a £24m bid rejected for highly-regarded Roma winger Cengiz Under last week, but still remain favourite to sign him with bookies Betfred at Evens. If they can improve their offer for the 21-year-old Turkish international he would be a big improvement to Emery’s wide options.

Unger has scored eight times in Serie A since moving to Rome last year, though Arsenal may need to spend around 50 million Euros to land the youngster, which with Barcelona and Manchester City also interested, may mean they have to shop elsewhere.

Miguel Almiron

With Aaron Ramsey’s contract running down there will be an opening for a creative attacking midfielder at Arsenal in the near future and it’s also one area of the pitch where Emery can invest to improve this side anyway.

There has been much speculation that The Gunners have made a deal in principle behind the scenes for Atlanta United’s Miguel Almiron, but if they haven’t already then Arsenal should make an approach to sign the midfielder in January.

Almiron has netted 12 times in the MLS this season and added 13 assists and it’s rumoured he could be available for around £10m – a steal in today’s market for a promising attacking talent and at just 24, the Paraguayan would have many years ahead to make an impact at the Emirates.

Malcom

Barcelona’s Malcom is being touted for a move in the January window, despite only moving to the La Liga champions from Bordeaux this summer.

The 21-year-old Brazilian has yet to start a game for Enersto Valverde’s side, only playing a total of 25 minutes in two substitute appearances this season and life in Catalonia is affecting his mental state.

He remains one of the hottest young talents in world football however and may relish the chance to play in England, while Arsenal are understood to be keeping an eye on his situation amidst potential competition from Chelsea and Spurs.

Alberto Moreno

It would be a shock move, but Arsenal have been linked to Liverpool outcast Alberto Moreno, who will be available cheap in January as his contract runs out in the summer.

It’s a deal that may also make some sense. Sead Kolasinac struggles with injuries and Nacho Monreal is again, while Emery previously had Moreno in his ranks at Seville.

Moreno is flawed from a defensive standpoint but he can be a threat going forward – not unlike Hector Bellerin – and Emery may be able to get the best out of the Spaniard, who is still only 26.

Jose Gaya

Sticking at left-back, Valencia’s Jose Gaya has been linked with a move to the Emirates in the past and is another Spaniard who can be a threat going forward down the flanks.

At 23, he would have plenty of time to develop under Emery and already has bags of top-level first team experience in La Liga, battling against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
