Financial Benefits of Özil
Assists and goals. We’ve all seen the YouTube clips, many of us have seen him lining up for Real Madrid live on TV or watching the Revisita La Liga highlights so we know what to expect from Özil but what else can he bring to Arsenal?
Trophies and money, and in modern football it’s tough to have one without the other. They say you have to speculate to accumulate and £42.5m spent on Özil may well turn out to be the best investment Arsenal has ever made aside from the Emirates.
Mesut’s global profile and world-class status could help Arsenal bring in more commercial partners and use that money to invest in more world-class players thus completing and restarting the circle. He is bound to play a big part in making Arsenal some money this year so why not make a little money yourself by putting a bet on football and him scoring or assisting this weekend, or however you like?
However commercial revenue is not where I see the big money coming in from Özil. I see Arsenal increasing revenues through Özil by using him as the catalyst to winning trophies.
Winning the League Cup or the FA Cup wouldn’t bring in huge amounts of money with the League Cup winners earning £100,000 and FA Cup winners earning £2m. When you factor in matchday revenue etc you could be looking at a total of £10-12m for winning both competitions.
Not a huge amount of money but the significance of winning a trophy would be immeasurable. It would finally get rid of some of the stigma surrounding Arsenal’s barren years and make ‘winners’ of the team which could in turn lead to greater belief in the run in for bigger competitions like the Premier League and the Champions League.
Premier League winners are estimated to earn £60m including £15m for finishing 1st. Not a huge difference between 4th place who earn £55m but that extra £5m makes all the difference because it comes with a new set of pressures. That extra £5m means you are the champions and you have something to protect.
What is the best way to protect something? Increase security. How do football clubs do that? By investing in better personnel.
Champions League winners earn around £47m which is a significant increase on the £26.8m Arsenal earned last year for getting through to the knockout stages.
The money from winning the Champions League pays for, or pays for a lot of, a very good footballer so investing in the squad becomes easier.
Winning these trophies isn’t about the money, it’s almost entirely about the glory, however winning these trophies and the money that goes with it only breeds more cash and more cash is incredibly important when it comes to building and maintaining a squad that will challenge year on year.
And Özil can be the catalyst to start that off and we fancy him to kick it off with a goal or assist on his debut.
Come on Arsenal!
