Throwback: 3 of Arsene’s Best Arsenal Signings

Whenever a new transfer window opens, Arsenal are linked to an incredible array of players from around the world. Manager Arsene Wenger has a strict transfer philosophy, however, and one which compels him only to invest heavily on occasions where players are able to justify their market value. While this has occasionally restricted Arsenal’s transfer activity and drawn criticism, however, such an ethos has enabled Wenger to sign some of the worlds’ most talented youngsters and mould them into world class players.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at three of Wenger’s best signings during his 18 year tenure as Arsenal manager:

Robin van Persie

(Bought for £2.5 million from Feyenoord in 2004)

While some Arsenals fans may despise Van Persie for moving north to bitter rivals Manchester United, few can dispute his quality and the contribution that he made to the club. An FA Cup winner during his time with the Gunners, he scored several memorable goals and emerged as a cult player despite several long-term injuries. He is particularly renowned for a golden 17 month period towards the end of his career, where he scored a staggering 59 goals and became one of the worlds’ best forwards. The £24 million that the club received for his services also represented great business for a 29 year old player, and Van Persie has certainly struggled to maintain his best form for the Red Devils.

Patrick Vieira

(Bought for £3.5 million from AC Milan in 1996)

The bulk of Arsene Wenger’s trophies were won between 1997 and 2005, and midfield dynamo Patrick Viera was at the heart of this success. A physically strong and forceful player, Viera also boasted a silky touch and was able to contribute crunching tackles, goals and skilful assists in equal measure. He also forged an incredible partnership with French compatriot Emmanuel Petit, which was integral to the club achieving two League and Cup doubles and seven titles in all. After a decade of almost unprecedented success, Arsenal still managed to sell Viera for a handsome profit to Italian giants Juventus.

Thierry Henry

(Bought from for £11 million from Juventus in 1999)

While the mercurial Henry may have cost more than Robin Van Persie and Patrick Viera combined, his impact will live even longer in the memories of Arsenal fans. Arriving as an extremely quick but inconsistent winger with an awkward style, Henry peppered a number of ineffective displays with performances of genuine menace when he destroyed opposition full-backs. Wenger was able to harness this raw talent, turning Henry into the finest forward in Europe and one of the best players of the modern era. He left as Arsenal’s record goal scorer, and managed to win an impressive 7 trophies during his time at the Emirates.
