Could Arsenal Finish Higher Than 2nd?
Arsenal's professional, if not entirely convincing, win over Everton at the weekend took them within 4 points of second place Manchester City who went down to Liverpool earlier in the day.
At one point Arsenal's future as a top four club looked in real jeopardy but now we are looking at 2nd as a real possibility. Is that the limit for Arsenal though?
Arsenal are now 9 points behind leaders Chelsea who have a game in hand and 4 points behind reigning champions Manchester City. With crucial matches against Manchester United, Southampton, Tottenham and quite a few teams battling for survival (who always seem to up their game when it's all on the line) City are realistically catchable. Their 2015 form has been abysmal by the high standards they set themselves.
Conversely, Arsenal have the second best points record in 2015 in the Premier League, their 2.25 per game just behind Liverpool's 2.50. With Arsenal in such fine form, benefitting from the increasing influence of Mesut Özil and Premier League forged clinical touch of Giroud, you'd be foolish not to back Arsenal to push City close.
Could Arsenal follow up their FA Cup with more silverware?
Chelsea face West Ham and City play Leicester at the same time tomorrow as Arsenal line-up against QPR and it could be an opportunity for Arsenal to reduce the gap on Chelsea and maintain the difference with City.
Leicester have given some good teams a run for their money this season so it's not beyond the realms of possibility for them to upset City but realistically we are looking at a City win. West Ham are more than capable of taking points off an inflated Chelsea side who wouldn't be the first team to take their eye off the ball after winning a trophy. Potentially Manchester City could reduce the gap on Chelsea to 2 or 3 points which will worry Chelsea even with their game in hand.
A nervous team is one more likely to make mistakes and let's face it, Fabregas has always been a second half bottler and can't be relied on to keep up his pre-Christmas form. If City are in touching distance of Chelsea and we are in touching distance of City then anything is possible.
Second is up for grabs for Arsenal and if they overhaul City before the middle of April then they could be within a few points of Chelsea who will be under pressure and facing United - who will be under pressure of their own from Liverpool, Tottenham and Southampton - and Arsenal in quick succession.
Arsenal have come from behind before to win the title and they could do it again. It might seem ridiculous to think so but if second is attainable then there is no reason we should discount ourselves from the title race just yet.
